Nakagusuku Cstale

In the second half of the 14th century,Sakinakagusuku Aji constructed four enclosures: the First, Second, South and West enclosures. Construction took place over several generations. Around 1440, the Nakagusuku Aji Gosamaru, who had been relocated from Zakimi Castle in Yomitan, added the North and Third enclosures, completing construction of this castle with six beautiful enclosures. In August 15th 1458 of the Chinese calendar month, Katsuren Aji, the Lord Amawari, led a raid with the king’s army, suspecting Gosamaru of treason. Lord Gosamaru committed suicide, without attempting to fight.

  • It is said to have been a wooden turret above the gate. The stone wall protrudes from both sides of the gate to allow defense from three directions; the front and the either side.

Tomb of Gosamaru

  • This is one of the oldest turtleback tombs existing in Okinawa, and Lord Gosamaru of Nakagusuku Castle rests in the tomb.
